Years now you have lived
beside the mountain.

Have watched the clouds’
shadows move across

the sage-scrubbed mountain
and it is like watching

from the sea floor
whales moving

beneath boats.
Breath-holding beings

bending light.
Years now you have lived

in a cottage cozied up
to the mountain. Years now

you have known
fuck all

about the mountain.
You know you love

the fog-bearded mountain.
You don’t know

exactly what
that means.
